Hot Ground Gym® was founded in 2013 in Illinois by a group of military veterans and former first responders who met after their time in service. Initially, the gym offered combatives and self-defense training, along with a fun kids’ class that blended Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and obstacle course activities.
What began as a side offering quickly revealed something powerful—kids thrived in this environment. By 2015, the founders made a bold decision to shift focus entirely to developing a one-of-a-kind kids’ program, built around physical fitness, mental toughness, and real-life skills.
The founders—having seen the effects of trauma in their past professions—found a new sense of purpose in working with youth. For them, teaching kids in a structured, fun, and disciplined setting wasn’t just a job—it was therapeutic and meaningful. They envisioned a place where children could grow stronger not just physically, but emotionally and socially, surrounded by positive role models. The name Hot Ground Gym reflects that spirit: “an austere environment, but safe”—a rugged, engaging space where kids can be challenged, supported, and inspired every step of the way.
